National Sun Yat-Sen University Offers 3% Reduction in Tuition and Fees to All Students Including overseas Chinese and International Students

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) has established measures to ensure campus security and also students’ class attendance. These includes relevant practices facilitating registration payment and course selection, arrangements of dormitory for students subjected to quarantine or health management, access control for entering buildings, and physical or mental condition counseling. In coping with the hardship incurred by the pandemic to students and their families, NSYSU has announced a 3% reduction in tuition and fees for the entire 2020 school year for all students, including overseas Chinese and International students, to further advance NSYSU’s commitment to the university’s social responsibility.

The National Sun Yat-sen University offers multiple admission channels for overseas Chinese students. In addition to applying for admission as an international student, either through the "joint distribution" or "individual application" channels of the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students, an individual recruitment channel for overseas Chinese students has been established since 2018. Students can apply directly through the “school recommendation" or "individual application" method. Also, for the first time starting this year (2020), overseas Chinese students will be able to apply to master's and doctoral programs through the second “individual recruitment” channel. Moreover, to express appreciation of outstanding overseas Chinese, NSYSU has set up a "Si-Wan Stars Scholarship for Overseas Chinese Students" since 2019. Overseas Chinese students that are admitted to the university through "individual recruitment" or "direct admission" channels, upon recommendation by the head of the department they apply, can receive a scholarship of up to NT $ 30,000. Additionally, many scholarships and financial aid options from the university and outside sources are available to overseas Chinese students. Ample educational resources provide a carefree experience for overseas Chinese students who come to study here.

NATTAWUT KAMONKANCHANA (Tian Haoxu), currently a sophomore at NSYSU´s Department of Business Management, came to study at NSYSU through strong recommendation from one of his alumni from Jien Hwa Comprehensive Senior High School in Thailand. Tian pointed out that NSYSU is highly ranked in the QS World University Rankings and is a national university well-funded by the government. After arriving at Kaohsiung, he found the city to be a very convenient place to live. The university is located near the MRT station and there are buses running through the campus giving students easy access to every corner of the city. Being a very business-minded person, Tian and his classmates use the university’s abundant resources to form an entrepreneurial team at the “Startup Container Hub”, under the guidance of professors and mentors from the industry. Their creativity and dreams are being realized through online marketing and video design business projects. LOO KIAT WEI, an IT student at NSYSU, graduated from MUAR CHUNG HWA HIGH SCHOOL in Malaysia. LOO said that while the academic requirements of the Information Technology department are very demanding, he still manages to find leisure time to admire the beauty of Sizihwan or explore the rich resources of Chaishan (Monkey Mountain). LOO expresses that Hui-ching Yap (overseas Chinese students counselor, graduated from the Chinese Literature Department of NSYSU) takes good care of him and others like him who come from different countries. In addition, NSYSU provides many on-campus part-time opportunities to students. LOO also uses his spare time to work on-campus to lessen the financial burden on his parents.

National Sun Yat-Sen University actively recruits overseas students to study in Taiwan. It has spared no effort in internationalization by strengthening exchanges and cooperation with international partners to expand student’s international horizon and to enhance student's foreign language skills. The number of overseas students who have studied in NSYSU exceeds 5,000, creating a multicultural atmosphere in the campus. In the past, overseas Chinese students often used the "joint distribution" method to enter the university. In 2020, creating more choices and opportunities for them, a second "individual recruitment” channel is added to enable students to choose their departments of study and favorite university based on their own interests and expertise.

The second “individual recruitment “channel registration date is from May 18 to July 3, 2020. URL: https://exam-oaa.nsysu.edu.tw/p/412-1065-16655 php? Lang = zh-tw, contact: Recruitment Strategy Office of Academic Affairs -Helen Yen, contact email: nsysu-overseas@mail.nsysu.edu.tw
